Vaia Presents Financial AI Benchmarking at Big Ideas for Small AI
Basecamp is Elevation Capital's platform for early-stage founders, bringing together companies from across the firm's ecosystem to share work in progress. At its 'Big Ideas for Small AI' session, run with IAIRO (Elevation Capital) in August 2026, Shruthi Cauvery presented Vaia's research on financial AI benchmarking, bringing Vaia's work on specialised AI systems into a conversation with researchers, builders, and investors from the Indian AI ecosystem.
The session focused on a question that is becoming increasingly important as AI moves into professional environments: what actually makes an AI system useful for financial decision-making?
What the benchmarking work measures
Traditional benchmarks can measure a model's performance on isolated tasks, but real financial workflows demand much more. Analysts and investment professionals need systems that can work with evidence, perform financial calculations, understand context, navigate regulatory requirements, and produce outputs that are genuinely useful in decision-making processes.
Vaia's benchmarking work examines this gap between general model capability and real-world workflow readiness.
- Grounding: is every claim traceable to a source document?
- Financial computation: does the arithmetic hold across a chain of steps?
- Indian context: does the analysis reflect the right Indian regulatory and market context?
- Deliverable readiness: is the output in a form a professional could actually send?
Why generic benchmarks fall short
The findings reinforced an important idea behind Vaia's approach to AI: high scores on generic benchmarks do not automatically translate into enterprise usefulness.
As financial institutions increasingly experiment with AI, the challenge is shifting from selecting the most capable general-purpose model to building systems that understand the context in which decisions are made. This includes institutional knowledge, domain expertise, data sources, regulations, and the specific workflows that define how an organisation operates.
Where to read it
The session at Big Ideas for Small AI was an opportunity to contribute to that broader conversation and share Vaia's perspective on what the next generation of specialised financial AI should be measured against. The full framework is published in Vaia's research section as "Beyond Benchmark Accuracy: A Production-Oriented Evaluation Framework for Trustworthy Enterprise Financial AI".
