Shruthi Cauvery on Finding Flow

Friends of Books (FROB) runs reading and discussion sessions, including book talks hosted at venues such as the Bangalore International Centre. On 26 August 2024, Shruthi Cauvery joined a session, alongside Hari TN, Debleena Majumdar, and other speakers, on Flow by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, exploring one of the most influential ideas in modern psychology and creativity.

The concept of flow describes a state of deep engagement in which a person becomes fully absorbed in an activity. Time seems to pass differently, distractions recede, and attention becomes focused on the task at hand.

Why the idea travels

Csikszentmihalyi's work has influenced conversations across psychology, education, creativity, leadership, and performance because it asks a deceptively simple question: what makes an experience deeply meaningful? The discussion brought together readers and speakers to explore how the idea of flow appears in different aspects of life and work.

Why Shruthi joined

For Shruthi, whose professional journey spans entrepreneurship, investing, and technology, the conversation offered an opportunity to step outside conventional discussions around business and growth. Building companies requires ambition and execution, but it also requires sustained attention: understanding what helps people engage deeply with meaningful work is increasingly relevant in a world characterised by constant information and distraction.

The session reflected Vaia's broader belief in engaging with ideas beyond its immediate industry. Technology and finance shape how organisations operate, but human creativity and attention remain at the centre of how meaningful work gets done.
